Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Name a good Space from the 80's

I listened to 9-2-83 Boise tonight and the SPACE is particularly melodic and sinister. A large junk of it is just Bob and Jerry dueling with little or no back-up--Bob keeps at this snaky groove that just lights a fire under Jer. I love space when it takes an unexpected direction (those Two Soldiers jams get a lot of play with me.)

It would be grate to assemble a sort of playlist of nothing but interesting space segments.

Any recommendations out there?

Did you ever listen to the infrared roses release?

Yeah, and I unfortunately sold it years back. Love that disc.

When you mentioned the setlist of space segments all I could think of was infrared roses. When I had a six disc changer I used to play that all the time in shuffle mode.

Even after hearing every other show, the one from Dead Set, (10-31-80) still stands out as one of the most fully realized, though fairly compact versions of "space". The fact that it transitions seamlessly into Fire on the Mountain acts in its favor as well.

I've always been partial to the one from Worcester 10-4-85 when Jerry suddenly decides to experiment with a digital delay for a couple of minutes. The primordial space on 1-22-78 in which Jerry feels his way toward the Close Encounters theme is cool too.

An undermentioned show. I like Healy's twisting of Space on this night. After D/S is the goods.

10/15/83 contains a space with some unique Weir and Garcia interplay.

2nd night of the Fox 85: http://www.archive.org/details/gd1985-10-29.sbd.walker-scotton.miller.105818.flac16 (counting the jam after Crazy Fingers too...);

Duke opening that aforementioned Spring '82 Jerry & Phil swap sides tour: http://www.archive.org/details/gd1982-04-02.sbd.tetzeli.clugston-fix.34846.sbeok.shnf (Other one space w/a relentless Brent)--to my ear the sbd has phil-compression during the O1 rumble up; try http://www.archive.org/details/gd1982-04-02.aud.nak700.110597.flac1644

Cinci 6.25.85 by the river with loose speakers literally running the sound during space up over & down around the stage (gd1985-06-24.mtx.seamons.94663 or http://www.archive.org/details/gd85-06-24.set2.oade-schoeps.sacks.24662.sbeok.flacf)

gd1986-04-19.sbd.miller.34419- THE 2nd set

Healy's quad spins like at 9.2.88 (not sure the experience can be captured in a 2 track recording), try http://www.archive.org/details/gd1988-09-02.senn4xx.hubbard.bandrofcheck.82542.sbeok.flac16

& out of bounds, I just heard http://www.archive.org/details/gd1979-01-15.111592.mtx.chappell.sb32.flac16 today & the space was memorable...!

Great Thread!

Glad you brought the topic up as I have a fabulous Space from 9 days later that I was smitten with. Check out the whole He's Gone > Drums > Space > Truckin' for full effect.

http://www.archive.org/details/gd83-09-11.sbd.dankseed.4995.sbeok.shnf

Drums is ecstatic, with Billy laying down the tribal funk and Mickey adding all sorts of weirdness. We get singing bowls and chimes and then Bobby comes in with the melodic sinister vibes. Jerry joins in with some inspired whirls and swirls of smoke right from the dragon's mouth. The tease before Truckin' is absolutely delicious.
